How Do I Capture a Property with the FloorCapture App?

  • Updated

Capturing a property with FloorCapture is quick and straightforward. With just your iPhone or iPad, you can capture an accurate digital version of any space and start working with it right away.

Watch the video to see how it’s done or follow the step-by-step guide below.

This article covers everything you need to know about the FloorCapture app, from preparation to the capturing process, adding floors, and fixing missed areas.

What Should I Do Before I Start with FloorCapture?

Here are our top tips on how to prepare a property:

  • Light it up –  Turn on all lights and open curtains or blinds. The more light, the better.
  • Clear the clutter –  Make sure at least part of each wall near the floor is visible. It helps to detect room boundaries more accurately. Having other people in the room is typically okay, as long as they do not block large areas of the walls.
  • Capture room by room –  For best results, capture each room individually. You don't need to worry about the order, as the app automatically recognizes your location and accurately assembles the rooms at the end.
  • Close other apps – If possible, close all other apps on your phone. This helps the FloorCapture app run faster and more smoothly.

  2. Position yourself: Walk into the room where you want to start. For best results, close the door. If possible, stand near the middle of the room about 5 feet (1.5 meters) from a wall.
  3. Start: Hold your device vertically and point it straight ahead. When you are ready, tap Start.

  4. Capture the first wall: Slowly tilt the device up and down so the camera “sees” the floor and the ceiling. As you do, white lines will appear to show wall and object detection, and a small white 3D model begins to form at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Move around the room: Move slowly around the room, walking sideways, with your device facing the wall. Avoid rapid movements.
  6. Directly face doors and windows: When you reach a door or window, try to face it directly. This helps the AI accurately detect the door swing angle and improves the overall capture quality.
  7. Move between rooms: When you have completed a room, tap Stop, then move to the next room. For best results, close the door behind you. Once you’re positioned in the next room, tap Start to resume capturing. FloorCapture will save the coordinates to piece together the property's floor plan.

Tips

  • Multi-level properties: Complete the first floor and save it. Then click New Floor. You can find detailed steps here: How do I add another floor?
  • Smaller areas: Smaller closets, outdoor areas, and darker storage areas may be challenging to capture. Once your capture is complete, open the project in the RoomSketcher app and add these yourself.

What if I Forgot to Capture an Area?

Oops, missed a room? No worries, it happens to the best of us. Before you wrap up at a property, it’s always smart to double-check your capture to ensure everything has been captured. If you realize something is missing, there are easy ways to fix it and keep your project on track.

Here's how you can review a capture:

  1. Start FloorCapture, open My Projects, and open the captured project.
  2. Tap the image of the capture to access the floor plans.
  3. Tap the 2D Floor Plan to enlarge it.
Tip: If you haven't generated a 2D floor plan yet, click Generate.
  4. Walk around the property and compare it to the 2D Floor Plan.

If you notice that something is missing or you forgot to capture an area, you have two options.

  • Option 1 - Start a new project
    • On the FloorCapture Projects page, tap the yellow + New Project button.
