How Can I Draw Sloped Ceilings?

  • Updated

Accurate ceiling modeling is key when presenting designs for attics or lofts with varying ceiling heights. With RoomSketcher, you can define sloped ceilings by setting ceiling heights along specific walls — allowing you to create precise 3D visuals and adds a professional touch to your project.

What Are Sloped Ceilings?

Sloped ceilings in RoomSketcher are created by adjusting ceiling heights at different points in a room. By setting some ceiling points higher and others lower, RoomSketcher automatically creates a smooth slope between them.

How Do I Set Different Ceiling Heights for the Slopes?

  1. Open a project in the RoomSketcher App.
  2. Click the red Mode button and open Walls mode.
  3. Click the Select tool  and then click the end of a wall or divider line (4 grey arrows appear when the end is selected, as shown in the image below).
  4. On the right, click Advanced Properties.
  5. In Ceiling Height, type the height for the ceiling at that location.

Note: Connecting walls need to have the same height at the point where they connect.

  6. To the right of the Ceiling Height value, you will see one of three letters:
    • F (Fixed) = You have indicated a new ceiling height.
    • C (Calculated) = Ceiling height is calculated based on other ceiling heights you have indicated.
    • L (Level) = The default value set in level properties is used.
  7. Click to select another wall or divider end and set its height using the steps above.

In the example above, we have placed a divider line in the center with a ceiling height of 3300 mm and parallel walls on either side that have a height of 2500 mm. See snapshots of this project below.

How Can I View My Sloped Ceilings?

Take Snapshots

One way to see your sloped ceilings is to take snapshots with a camera, either inside or outside a building.

What Should I Check If My Sloped Ceiling Isn’t Displaying Correctly?

Here are some handy tips to help you create sloped ceilings in RoomSketcher:

  • Keep walls at 90 degrees: All walls and divider lines used to set ceiling heights must be drawn exactly at 90 degrees for the slope to work properly.

  • Set exterior ceiling heights first: It’s best to set ceiling heights on the outer walls (after drawing all exterior walls) before you add interior walls. This makes things simpler and reduces errors.

  • Minimum ceiling height: Ceiling heights can’t be set below 4 inches (100 mm).

  • Ignore temporary errors: If you’re adjusting several ceiling heights along a wall, you might see an error message saying the heights don’t match. Don’t worry — ignore these until you've updated all relevant ceiling heights.

  • Use divider lines: Divider lines help you set different ceiling heights along a wall. They won’t show on your final floor plans, so you can use them freely to shape your ceilings. However, please note that you can’t place a window or door on a wall that has been split with a divider line.

  • Keep it simple: The RoomSketcher App isn’t designed to create complex sloped ceilings. Simple slopes work best.

  • Turn off ceilings for outdoor areas: For balconies or other exterior spaces, turn off the ceiling. In Walls mode, click the area to select it, go to Advanced Properties, and set Show Ceiling to OFF.

  • Troubleshoot errors room by room: If you get an error and aren’t sure why, try turning off the ceiling in each room one at a time. If the error disappears after you disable a ceiling, the problem is likely in that room — double-check the walls and dividers there.

  • Curved wall caution: If you have a sloped ceiling connected to a curved wall, it’s best to turn Show Ceiling to OFF to get the best result in Live 3D.

It's not possible to create actual roofs, dormers, or vaults or place windows on the sloped ceilings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will sloped ceilings affect my 2D Floor Plan?

No, sloped ceilings are only visible in 3D views and 3D Floor Plans. Your 2D Floor Plan will remain clean and easy to read. The divider lines you used to specify different ceiling heights won't show.

Can I create sloped ceilings with a RoomSketcher Free subscription?

Absolutely! You can create sloped ceilings with a Free subscription and take low-res snapshots to view them. If you want to generate a 3D Photo or 3D Floor Plan, simply upgrade to a Pro subscription

What does the message "One or more ceiling heights are in conflict or do not define a correct ceiling" mean?
This usually means that one or more of the sloped ceilings in your design aren't forming a complete and valid ceiling shape. This can happen if the ceiling slopes don’t meet correctly at the corners or the angles don’t align properly.
