How Do I Draw the Walls of the Kitchen?

The first step is to draw the walls for your kitchen. If you aren't sure of the final size, start by drawing an approximate size room – you can fine-tune the wall lengths later.

  1. Open the RoomSketcher App and create a new project.
  2. Open Walls mode and draw the outer and inner walls of the kitchen as needed.

For more information on how to draw walls, please see How do I draw walls with exact wall lengths?

How Do I Change the Material of the Walls and Floors?

Next, add materials to the walls and floor. While we suggest that you add the materials first (before adding cabinets and appliances), you can add and change materials later in the process.

Here's how to add materials to one wall

  1. When working with just one wall, open Walls mode.
  2. Click the Select tool to choose a wall and note that each side is labeled either A or B.
  3. On the right, click Material Side A or Material Side B (the side of the wall that you wish to add materials to) to choose a material for the wall.

For more detailed information, please see Paint, Wallpaper or Tile a Single Wall and Add a Kitchen Backsplash.

Here is an example kitchen with brick materials on one wall:

  1. When working with all the walls in the room, open Materials mode.
  2. You can use the categories or search for a material, such as Tiles.
  3. Click to select and click to place the material on all the walls in the room.

For more information, see Paint and Decorate Walls.

Here's how to add materials to the floor

  1. Open Materials mode.
  2. Use the categories or search for a material, such as Hardwood FlooringTile, or Concrete, and click to select.
  3. Then click into a room to place a material.

How Do I Start Arranging My Kitchen Plan?

When placing kitchen items, it’s helpful to follow a logical order to create an efficient and well-balanced layout. Here’s a simple sequence to guide you:

1) Add Corner Items First

Adding corner items first help define the main shape and flow of the kitchen layout early on. Once corner cabinets or appliances are placed, it becomes much easier to fit and align the remaining cabinets and items accurately along the walls.

2) Next, Add Appliances

Add your appliances. Positioning major appliances (like the refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher) early helps establish the kitchen’s workflow and ensures you meet functional requirements, such as the classic work triangle.

3) Fill The Remaining Spaces

Fill in the remaining spaces with cabinets. Once the corners and appliances are set, it’s much easier to see exactly where base and wall cabinets should go, allowing you to optimize storage and achieve a balanced, practical layout.

How Do I Find Kitchen Items?

Once the walls and materials are in place, you can add appliances, cabinets, accessories, lighting, and more.

  1. Click or tap the red Mode button and open Furniture mode to find hundreds of kitchen items such as appliances, cabinets, and accessories.
  2. Check out these images of the types of available items and below the images, you’ll find tips for finding kitchen items.
  • Appliances, including ovens, sinks, refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, coffee makers, and more.

  • Base and Wall Cabinets, as well as kitchen islands, including flat front, shaker, and drawer styles. Wall cabinets can also have glass fronts, with or without muntins. Wall cabinets are available in two standard heights: 40 cm (15.75 inches) and 80 cm (31.5 inches) and you can customize the size of any cabinet.
    Note
: Only Pro and Team subscribers can access all cabinet styles.

What Are the Best Tips for Placing Kitchen Items?

The eye symbol indicates the front

Once you have located an item of furniture in the library, click or tap to select it and click or tap to place it. The eye indicates the front of the item (the side you would put away from a wall).

Use Best Fit

If an item is slightly too wide or narrow for a space, you can click Best Fit Width or Best Fit Length, like this:

and it automatically sizes to the space available:

For more information, see Use Best Fit to Size Items.

Make use of the Snapping feature

When you place kitchen items near walls or next to each other, they automatically snap into place for precise alignment.

If you want to disable snapping, hold the CTRL key while dragging (on a computer), or go to Menu > View, then toggle Snapping ON or OFF.

More tips on placing kitchen items

  • Move: Press and drag the center of any item on the floor plan to move it.
  • Rotate: Press and drag the curved blue arrows to rotate the item or object. Or press hotkey Q to rotate the item clockwise 90 degrees.
  • Delete: Press the red X to delete an item.
  • Precise placement: You can zoom in: Use your mouse scroll-wheel, or click Menu and then under View, click Zoom Control.

How do I place an item on top of another item?

You might want to place a bowl or magazines on a table or kitchen base cabinet. Simply drag and drop the item onto the surface — its height above the floor will adjust automatically so it sits correctly on the table or cabinet.

How Can I Customize Kitchen Items?

You have a range of options to tailor kitchen items to your exact needs. You can adjust the size of pieces, choose different colors and materials for cabinets, and customize finishes on select items (available with paid plans).

How do I resize kitchen items?

  1. In Furniture mode, select an item to see its properties on the right.
  2. Here, you can adjust the Width, Depth, Height, and Height Above Floor.
Alternatively, you can resize an item directly by pressing and dragging the blue arrows at the corners.

Tip: You can use the above-explained Best Fit feature to automatically resize items such as cabinets, wardrobes, closets, stairs, and certain furniture to fit a specific space perfectly.
